Jazz band is a musical ensemble that is involved in playing jazz music. Jazz bands vary in the number of members in the band and the style of jazz that they play. The size of a jazz band is closely related to the style of jazz that they play as well as the type of venues where they play.
The Jazz bands can vary in size from a very big band, to a smaller trio or quartet. The trio is a three piece band mainly consisting of a pianist, a double bass player and a drummer. Some bands do use vocalists, while others prefer to be purely an instrumental group.
Types of jazz ensembles:
• Combos – It is a small jazz ensemble consisting of three to four musicians are generally known as combos and are seen performing in small night clubs. The band always contains a bass along with any other combination of instruments.
• Larger ensembles - The big bands or the large ensembles generally perform in bigger dance halls and other larger venues. The main combinations of the larger bands include traditional big band instruments: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion.
A jazz orchestra is also a big band and typically consists of 5 saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a rhythm section. This rhythm section is in turn made up of piano, bass, guitar and drums. In the jazz orchestra, usually at least one instrument is capable of playing chords, such as a piano, guitar, Hammond organ or vibraphone.
